Vees introduce important project called Community Heroes program

The Penticton Vees officially launched a new community initiative called the Community Heroes program.

The initiative will see a different local charity honoured at each Vees home game at the South Okanagan Events Centre during the 2018-19 regular season. Each charity will be presented with a cheque for $1,000 for a total of $28,000 over the season.

“Launching Community Heroes is a very important project for us,” Vees director of corporate partnershi­ps David Michaud said. “When we reached over 3,000 fans per game last season, we knew we had to find a way to say thank you to the community for supporting us the way they do. This will give us a chance to recognize 28 amazing groups that do great work in our community.

“Even more special than the $1,000, we think the chance for Vees Nation to recognize the great work these organizati­ons do will speak volumes. We hope to hear lots of

Peggy Sheridan and Jan Carroll carded a 125 to eke out a one-shot win at the Penticton Golf and Country Club ladies’ Noma Partington 2 day, 2 lady team, 2 day best net scores competitio­n.

Sherry Badger and Viv Mohoruk were second at 126, while Laura Mansell and Marleen Tymofievic­h were third at 127 by countback, edging out Elsy Mackie and Elaine Vonck.

Ellen Clay logged a 72 to win by one shot at the Summerland Golf and Country Club ladies’ Summerland Rental Centre low net tournament Tuesday.

Kathy Larkin was second at 73 followed by applause and cowbells when each of these organizati­ons are honoured.”

Any registered charity is able to apply to be a Community Hero, and can do so on the Vees’ website under the “In the Community” tab.

Recipients will be invited to join the Vees in the Gateway Casino Community Zone, and will be recognized in the arena during the second period. Vijai Vaagen at 74, Janis Goll at 75; Betsy McAndrew at 76, and Pat Gartrell and Amanda McConaghy at 77.

Larkin had the long putt on No. 19, while Lanette Graham (first flight) and McConaghy (second flight) had closest to the pin honours on No. 4.
