Herald on holidays
Penticton resident Diane Bresser-Brown and friend Wilma Gibson recently took the Herald on holiday to Greece. The photo was taken on the northeastern coast of Crete in a little area called Stalida. “What an amazing island this is. I would return in a heartbeat!” says BresserBrown. We welcome Herald holiday photos. Send them to editor@pentictonherald.ca. with the chief administrative officer, currently aptly carried out by Peter Weeber, and the highly competent City of Penticton staff.
Therefore, I know how critically important it is to vote for council candidates who know and care about the City of Penticton.
I was at the city’s recent boot camp about municipalities, and learned a lot there. But, as I think I almost have squatters-rights as a regular attendee at city council meetings, I’m well aware of those candidates who do (and don’t) attend council meetings.
So, my vote for mayor goes to Andrew Jakubeit! Brigid Kemp Penticton with, cut off from government funded needles, etc., because safely injecting a dangerous narcotic is still dangerous. It’s garbage that someone, somewhere has been able to convince government authorities to fund this nonsense that has had serious unintended consequences and social costs.
11. How can the excessive costs of police and fire be focused to get best value?
The costs of police and fire take up more of our municipal government budgets than they should and there has been very little done to measure and curtail costs. New service delivery models are needed and priorities need to be refocused.
12. Why should councillors vote themselves an increase in benefits or remuneration right after they are elected?
Quite frankly, understanding the record of councillors is important. They shouldn’t vote themselves raises without following an independent process.
While it’s not the money that’s at issue, a council that gets elected, votes itself a raise and hopes that people will forget four years later is unpalatable.
In fairness I’m told by one councillor he didn’t take it. Compensation for councillors should be evaluated by an independent committee of citizens, not staff or council itself.
