Election sign bylaw reminder
With the upcoming election just around the corner, nominees busily campaigning are being reminded by the city to ensure they are complying with sign placement regulations.
Bylaw officers, as a part of their duties during election times, will be regularly observing and responding to any reports of signs that may be violating restrictions.
Tina Siebert, Penticton’s bylaw supervisor, reminds candidates and anyone that may be curious that sign placement regulations are defined in bylaw 2018-32, Political Signage Regulations.
The city has posted on its website a press release regarding the placement of signs and included several tips for candidates, including the size of the sign, which cannot exceed 16 square feet. It may be placed on a private property only with the owner’s permission, and in regards to public land, signs can be placed only in areas that the city has designated (a list can be found on its website).
On polling days, signs cannot be within 100 metres of a polling station and must be removed by 8:00 a.m. on polling day.
Lastly, the city reminds candidates to prevent signs from obstructing traffic sightlines.
