Mustangs unbeaten at Oliver tourney
Maggie’s group of beginners prove to be fast learners, talented
The Princess Margaret Mustangs won two games and tied two at the annual Oliver Fall Festival senior girls’ field hockey tournament on the weekend.
Twelve teams from around the province took part in the two-day event.
Maggie started the tournament with a 2-0 win against Chilliwack. Goals were scored by Brook Scott and Christine Maurer, assisted by Jeanine Florence.
Strong defensive play was turned in by Alyse Kohler-Mergel and Alice James.
In the second game, Maggie tied Maple Ridge 0-0. Forwards Susie Robinson, Sammy Fehr along with Brooke Scott and Christine Maurer kept up good pressure in the game.
The third game also ended in a 0-0 tie against Mt. Boucherie as Kara Stayberg and Emily Hollenbeck and Kayla Francisco had strong defensive games.
In the last game, Brook Scott scored twice as Maggie defeated Oliver 2-0. Kayla Francisco picked up an assist and once again Alyce Kohler-Mergel and Alice James dominated on defence.
Goalies Annika Wright and Eden Pearce, both playing in goal for the first time, didn’t allow a single goal in four games.
International students, Yuki Tange, Chihiro Kondo and Haruka Kubo — who have never played the game before — did an excellent job of learning quickly.
Maggie’s team has over half the players who are playing for the first time. Coaches Makeena Hartmann and Joycelyn Legary were excited at how well the team performed for their first tournament.
