Entrepreneur ready for another successful term on city council

- By MELANIE EKSAL

Max Picton is ready for another successful term on city council. At 37 years of age, Picton has had the opportunity to call Penticton his home for his entire life. An appreciator of the outdoors, he has served as chairman on the Penticton tourism board and first ran for office in 2014 on a platform centered on a “United Penticton,” in which he was elected at the top of the polls.

A successful entrepreneur, Picton has built his own business in the community with a focus on the entertainment, tourism and construction industries. Best known for his former business Barefoot Beach Resort, Picton now owns and operates Sun-Oak Construction.

“Penticton is working far more collaboratively than four years ago,” he remarked in a submitted profile, after declining a live interview. He attests this fact to his accomplishments that saw him chairing a tourism development task force, as well as the implementation of the South Okanagan Shared Services Agreement.

His bravery to suggest and implement strategies have seen successes, but also failures, to which Picton states have proven to be excellent learning opportunities. By ensuring that the community does not encounter the same issues twice, the city as Picton states, “now has one of the most robust engagement strategies in the province,” and “finally has a parks master plan, built by community members, for the first time in decades.”

Picton has been recognized as one of Penticton’s Top 40 under 40, and received the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award from the Penticton & Wine Country Chamber of Commerce back in 2012. His philosophy of giving back to his community that has supported him throughout his successful career has been evident through numerous donations and fundraisers in the past.

Election day is Saturday, Oct. 20.
