Move city forward, be an example across Canada, says Clarke

- By JAMES MILLER

Now that he’s joined the ranks of the “semi-retired,” Daryl Clarke believes the timing is right to run for city council.

A Penticton resident of 27 years, he recently retired as plant manager from Cut Technologies in Penticton. He’s presently a member of the city’s transportation committee and was previously on the downtown advisory and Penticton advisory committees. He was vice-chair of the Industrial Association and a director with the Penticton & Wine Country Chamber of Commerce. His volunteer service includes serving as chairman of the District Parents Advisory Committee and volunteering at various festivals over the years.

“I’ve been involved in a lot of things, and a lot of people know who I am, but in this campaign I’m not complacent. I’m out talking to a lot of people and listening to people who I’ve never had the chance to meet.”

Clarke agrees council has made mistakes in the past, but he’s running a positive campaign.

“Penticton is an absolutey beautiful place to live, but it could use a few little tweaks to improve things. They have some good things started, working on a crime program, the OCP, the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Penticton has a golden opportunity to move into the future, progressively and with a fresh start.”

The Official Community Plan, he believes, will set the direction for the city’s future. Planning and public consultation began over the past term and will continue with the new council.

“The OCP will be a major issue, the direction we head in as a whole. The major job of council is to set the direction on infrastructure, the arts, involve a lot of different groups and move the city forward in the right direction. This is a great opportunity to move forward and be an example, not only in British Columbia, but all across Canada. But, we all have to work together.”
