Playoffs taking place throughout weekend

The season finally ends for the “boys of summer” this weekend.

The South Okanagan Men’s Slo-Pitch League playoffs wrap up with a full slate of games at Lion’s Community Park and the adjacent Scott Mullins Field.

The top nine teams are battling it out for the championship, with the bottom eight playing for the consolation title. Both events are double-elimination format.

Championship (all games at Mullins field): There weren’t any big surprises in the first-round games this week as the defending champs and No. 1 seed Wolfpack beat Sandlot 27-8, No. 2 Sportsfreaks topped Diamond Edge Stucco Chillin 17-10, No. 3 Quest squeezed past Lightning 27-26, and Storm outlasted the Titans 28-25. Sandlot had beaten TDA/Copper Mug Guzzlers 22-13 in a preliminary round game.

On Saturday, it’s Sportsfreaks vs. Quest at 10 a.m., and Wolfpack vs. Storm at 11:30.

The winners advance to play at 4 p.m. with a berth in the final on the line, while the losers drop down into the single-loss bracket along with the five other teams.

The finals are Sunday at 2 p.m.

If the unbeaten team wins Game 1, they are the champs. If the single-loss pool survivor wins, it sets up a one-game showdown for the title at 3:30 p.m.

Consolation (all games at Lion’s): In firstround action, No. 1 Cariboozers routed Walk-Off Warriors 25-1, Black Contracting Raptors shaded Rolls Big Bats 14-13 and SIS Kryptonite nipped the Hitmen 22-21.

The format is similar to the championship side, with the competition wrapping Sunday with the final set for 2 p.m. and, if necessary, 3:30 p.m.
