Kavanaugh is not judge material
Dear editor: In her testimony to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, Christine Blasey Ford stated that Brett Kavanaugh was drunk when he sexually assaulted her. Mr. Kavanaugh stated in his testimony that he never sexually assaulted her. My question is, how does he know that?
Most drunks, having sobered up, retain no memory of what they did whilst inebriated, even the following day, so how can Mr. Kavanaugh be so certain some 30 years after the alleged event?
If his testimony had been presented in a court trial, any competent judge would have rejected it on the grounds that he could not possibly know for certain that what he said was true. Mr. Kavanaugh, of all people, should know that.
Regardless of whether or not Ms. Blasey Ford’s allegations are true, Mr. Kavanaugh’s performance at the hearing clearly shows that he is temperamentally unsuited to sit on the Supreme Court where judges are expected to deliberate carefully and render unbiased judgments – the exact opposite of what Mr. Kavanaugh revealed about himself.
His testimony was delivered in a heated rather than a measured manner and demonstrated clear bias towards those questioning his suitability. Will the committee members take that into account? I suspect not. Brian Butler Penticton
Editor’s note: Mr. Bergman’s letter of Sept. 25 (City either sues or is being sued) contained a typographical error. The writer intended to say the work at the site of the failed hockey dormitory cost $1 million, not the legal fees that resulted.
