Proteau seeking election to role as council ‘watchdog’

- By MELANIE EKSAL

Although it’s his first time running for council, Kevin Proteau promises to be Penticton’s “watchdog” if elected.

Proteau considers himself a “concerned citizen” who will work to “clean up city hall’s reputation of supporting corporate agendas rather than listening to the people,” he said in a statement.

From organizing local marches against Monsanto the past three years to demanding that city hall partake in manual ballot counts, Proteau is aiming to “start the conversation to clean up Penticton.”

He has also held public forums in the past to address public health and safety and fought to preserve the “historic use of Three Mile naturists beach.”

If elected to council, Proteau promises to represent the citizens of Penticton and address issues that for too long have lacked revisiting. His Facebook page, “Kevin Proteau for City Council,” provides more information for those needing it, and he welcomes citizens to reach out to him to let him know what changes they would like to see in the city.

Proteau states that, while he “may not have all of the answers,” he will collaborate with Penticton residents to find solutions “together.”

Proteau is behind an organization called Locals Supporting Locals, which describes itself as the heartbeat of the Okanagan and an alternative media source. Its main fundraiser is a calendar containing coupons and special offers for local businesses.

Proteau is also organizing a town hall meeting Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Cleland Theatre concerning 5G networks.

He claims 5G networks, which provide faster wireless internet service, pose a threat to human health and are being deployed without proper consultation.

Proteau declined an interview request and instead chose to submit his profile to the Herald.
