Steam storms to lopsided triumph

The Summerland Steam were on full-boil in a visit to Memorial Arena in Kamloops on Saturday.

Mitchell Gove produced a hattrick and Cody Swan tallied two goals and three assists as the Steam torched the Kamloops Storm 12-2 in KIJHL action.

Brett Wilson also scored twice, Ryan Allen, Liam McLaren, Zak Cooper, Everett Scherger and Sean Wilson tallied solos and Cody Loring added three helpers as the Steam built period leads of 5-1 and 10-1. Adam Fereira and Theran Kincross scored for struggling Kamloops (2-10-0), who were outshot 62-22.

The Steam (6-6-1) also played to a 2-2 tie with local rivals Osoyoos Coyotes Friday at the Sun Bowl Arena.

SATURDAY – Nelson 5 Coyotes 2: Jack Karran scored twice as the Leafs beat visiting Osoyoos to improve to 10-1-1 on the season.

Alex Erichuk, Mitchell Lavoie and Tyler Nypower also scored for the Leafs, who were up 1-0 and 3-0 at the intermissi­ons.

Milo Labonte scored both goals for the Coyotes, who were outshot 3422.

The Coyotes (1-8-1) are now winless in nine games and have the fewest points in the league with 3.

Kelowna 4 North Okanagan 3: Devin Sutton scored twice and Brody Dale had a goal and two helpers as the Chiefs won in North Okanagan to remain unbeaten on the season under new coach Ken Law at 12-0-1.

Dale leads the league in goals with 15 and points with 38.

Kelowna also won 7-2 in Grand Forks on Friday with Dale collecting a goal and a helper.

The Chiefs lead the KIJHL with 25 points, though the Revelstoke Grizzlies (8-0-0) remain the only team in the league with a perfect record.

FRIDAY – Coyotes 2 Steam 2: Cairo Rogers scored with 1:07 to go as Summerland salvaged a tie with Osoyoos.

Peter Michailide­s had given the struggling Coyotes a 2-1 lead with 3:50 to go. Brandon Della Paolera also scored for the Coyotes and Everett Scherger clicked for the visitors, with both goals coming in the middle stanza.

The Steam outshot the Coyotes 4539.

UPCOMING: It doesn’t get any easier for the Coyotes, who visit the Chiefs Tuesday at the Rutland Arena.

On Friday, Summerland goes to Spokane, and Osoyoos visits Sicamous.

On Saturday, Columbia Valley visits Osoyoos at 7:35 p.m., Summerland travels to Beaver Valley, and Kelowna hosts North Okanagan.
