Chiefs among Coyotes’ concerns

-

It continues to be Coyote Ugly for Osoyoos after the first five-plus weeks of the KIJHL season.

But it’s been pretty good for the Kelowna Chiefs.

Myles Mattila had a hat-trick as the Chiefs clobbered the Osoyoos Coyotes 9-0 Tuesday at the Rutland Arena.

Brody Dale and Devin Sutton each had two goals and three helpers, Zach Erhardt had a goal and three assists and Tyler Love also scored as the Chiefs built period leads of 5-0 and 7-0.

Braeden Mitchell had a routine 18-save night for the shutout, while the Chiefs unloaded 63 shots on Osoyoos goalies Daniel Paul and Brady Monteith.

The Chiefs remain undefeated in regulation at 13-0-1 and lead second-place Summerland by 14 points atop the Okanagan Division.

The Coyotes (1-9-1) have the fewest points in the 20-team league but only trail North Okanagan Knights by one point for the last playoff position in the division.

Dale leads the league with 17 goals and 43 points, Erhardt is second with 31 points and Sutton is third at 30 as the Chiefs keep rolling under former Coyotes head coach Ken Law.

On Friday, Summerland goes to Spokane, and Osoyoos visits Sicamous.

On Saturday, Columbia Valley visits Osoyoos at 7:35 p.m., Summerland travels to Beaver Valley, and Kelowna hosts North Okanagan.

Vernon’s Pospisil upsets Raonic

Vasek Pospisil advanced to the third round of the European Open tennis tournament with a 7-6 (3), 75 upset of fellow Canadian Milos Raonic on Wednesday.

Pospisil, a Vernon native, beat his hard-serving opponent at his own game, firing 11 aces to Raonic’s nine and converting 84 per cent of available first serve points.

Pospisil will next face the winner of an all-French matchup between Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the next round.

It’s Pospisil’s first career win over Raonic, who is ranked 20th in the world and was seeded third at the tournament in Antwerp, Belgium.

1 women’s league seems ‘inevitable’

National Women’s Hockey League commissioner Dani Rylan says the likelihood of a single North American women’s professional hockey league is “inevitable.”

It is believed to be the first time Rylan has publicly suggested the inevitability of forming one league with the Canadian Women’s Hockey League since the NWHL was formed three years ago. “We will get this done,” she said. Interim CWHL commissioner Jayna Hefford has called the formation of one league “a priority.”

Rylan’s comments come after both leagues discussed merger options this summer. Also on the table is league champions to compete in an end-of-season playoff.
