Students have their say on municipal candidates

According to the results of Student Vote, an educationa­l program to teach youth about voting, Gord Milsom was the kids’ choice in West Kelowna.

In the straw vote, Milsom collected 528 votes in the mayoral race and challenger Mary Mandarino had 248.

Those elected in the youth poll for city council were: Doug Findlater, 333; Stephen Johnston, 283; Phil Akins, 281; Rick de Jong, 239; Tiffany Pare, 231; and Rusty Ensign, 221. Jason Friesen and Jayson Zilkie were tied for first runner-up, each with 192 votes.

Student Vote also had a straw poll for representa­tives to the school boards. Following are the results from Student Vote. Central Okanagan School District City of Kelowna (four elected): Julia Fraser, 269; Norah Bowman, 240; Joel Fraser, 185; Lee-Ann Tiede, 166; Peter Pagliocchi­ni, 151; Rolli Cacchioni, 97; Joachim Nierfeld, 77; and Terry Giesbrecht, 74.

District of West Kelowna (one elected): Chantelle Desrosier, 263; and Chris Vernon Jarvis, 226.

No poll was held for Lake Country or Peachland’s representa­tive. Okanagan Similkamee­n Town of Osoyoos (two elected): Brenda Dorosz, 159; Casey Brouwer, 155; and Penny Duperron, 107. All other positions were acclaimed. Okanagan Skaha School District Penticton (four elected): Shelley Clarke, 122; Tracy Van Raes, 98; James Palanio, 91; Barb Sheppard, 91; Dan Walton, 87; Derek Hurst, 77; and Teresa Hebert, 55.

Summerland (two elected): Peter Waterman, 37; Dave Stathers, 21; Linda Van Alphen 15; and Julie Planiden, 4.

Rural trustee (one elected): Kathy Pierre, 17; and Ginny Manning, 7. Vernon School District Vernon (four elected): Tom Williamson, 113; Mark Olsen, 103; Mark Rivette, 97; Nicole Makohoniuk, 93; Mollie Bono, 81; Jenn Comazzetto, 85; Ronald Burton, 61; Christie Tujik, 61; and Paula Harned, 60.
