Spike strips slow stolen truck on West Bench

-

Penticton RCMP were successful in recovering a stolen vehicle after using spike strips to stop the 24-year-old driver Tuesday.

Police say plain-clothes officers spotted the stolen truck travelling southbound from Summerland to Penticton and attempted to stop the driver with spike strips near the Red Wing Resort area on Highway 97. The driver was able to avoid the spikes and fled up into the West Bench area.

Officers pursued the vehicle and found the driver heading towards Penticton Indian Band land.

Deploying spike strips once more, officers were successful in deflating the truck’s tires.

“Due to the truck being built to withstand tough driving conditions, the driver was able to continue driving, at slow speeds, up Green Mountain Road. After a few kilometres, the driver wasn’t able to continue,” explained Penticton RCMP spokesman Const. James Grandy in a press release Wednesday.

The name of the driver has not been released, however, police have confirmed that she is currently being held in custody under numerous charges including possessing a controlled substance and fleeing the police. She is set to appear in court today.
