Dozens of condos planned for downtown Summerland

- By Penticton Herald Staff

Early sketches of two development proposals that went before Summerland council Tuesday would see the construction of as many as 64 new condos and townhouses in the community.

The bulk of the new homes would go in at 13415 Lakeshore Dr. S. on the old cannery site.

A staff report suggests a developer wants to begin with two six-storey towers featuring 12 condominiums in each. The second phase of the project would then consist of a street-level commercial space with three levels and as many as 30 resortstyle condos above.

A rezoning would be required for the development.

The second project calls for 10 townhomes to replace a single-family home at 10518 Jubilee Rd.

“The building would have great curb appeal and would be very attractive close to the downtown core. It would be easy walking distance to downtown and would therefore be ideal for people with no vehicle,” Jonathan Bowman of Lighthouse Developments wrote in a letter presented to council.

“Our plan is to keep the units and rent them out to provide a much-needed low-cost rental market close to downtown where it currently isn’t possible to find rental accommodations.”

The development would include 12 parking stalls and 134 square metres of green space on site.

A rezoning and Official Community Plan amendment would be required for the project.

Council went along with a staff recommendation to forward both projects to the advisory planning commission and development services department for study, ahead of discussion of any possible regulatory changes.
