Campaign seeking more cold-weather clothing

- By MELANIE EKSAL

Less than two weeks remain for the Cover with Kindness drive, and with a large donation of blankets on hand, the South Okanagan Real Estate Board is now asking the community for winter clothing.

“We don’t want anybody to be cold after we finish this year’s (drive),” said Pamela Hanson, a past president of SOREB.

The hope is that incoming donations will include winter clothing items such as warm socks, long underwear, snow pants, men’s coats and boots. SOREB is accepting hygiene items, too.

But that isn’t to say that the Cover with Kindness Drive hasn’t seen its share of success this year: Royal LePage realtor Lyndi Cruickshank’s car was once so full the doors could barely shut, and Dawn Lysholt, the executive director at SOREB, has received a number of in-person donations at the office.

“We had one lady bring in a whole big thing of knitted toques — she does it every year,” said Lysholt.

The donations received will be distributed between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Nov. 27-28 at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church hall, and the community is welcome to bring items if anyone missed collection dates at a drop-off point.

While donations are set to help the homeless, items are also available to anyone struggling to dress themselves or their families warmly this winter.

“Everybody has a hard time at some point in their life meeting their needs,” Hanson said.

SOREB’s office, alongside Re/Max and other real estate offices, are accepting donations. For a list of other drop-off locations or to request assistance for donation pickups, please contact SOREB at 250-492-0626.
