Revamped toy drive goes this Thursday

- By MELANIE EKSAL

Toys for Tots to Teens is on the move to Pen-Hi this year and has a renewed emphasis on the older age group.

Grade 12 leadership students Katie Foreman and Matthew MacDonald have both attended and volunteered at past Toys for Tots to Teens and are excited to bring a fresh perspective to the 2018 edition, which goes Thursday.

“Teenagers in general are hard to shop for, so we’re trying to make some gift card packages to really try and make it Toys for Tots to Teens,” said MacDonald.

The goal is to receive 1,500 unwrapped gifts, but Foreman and MacDonald both agreed the ultimate goal is to make sure every child in the community has a present under the tree this year.

“Christmas has always been so special to me, and those kids don’t have anything,” Foreman said.

“These organizations are super excited about getting involved, and we really want to give the kids that light that we’re fortunate to have.”

“We want to make sure that kids our age are still getting the same treatment,” added MacDonald.

Set to run from 7 to 9 a.m., the event will offer breakfast to anyone who donates a gift. For those who don’t have a gift but would like breakfast, a minimum $5 cash donation is all that’s required.

For anyone interested in donating who can’t make the event, students will continue to accept unwrapped gifts at the school’s entrance in a drive-thru setup in the bus zone from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
