Kelowna to decide on ice by Nov. 1

-

A decision on whether Stuart Park’s ice rink will open this winter is expected in 10 days.

Deliberations are still underway among city officials on whether, and how, the popular outdoor rink can be operated in ways that comply with COVID-19 health and safety guidelines.

Indoor rinks have reopened. But by their very nature, with controllable access points, indoor rinks are easier to regulate in terms of the number of skaters.

Stuart Park’s rink, by contrast, has no boards, is free to use, and is normally open to everyone throughout from early morning until late evening.

The Stuart Park rink is usually open from early December until late February or early March.

Steve Fagan, the city’s arenas and stadiums supervisor, indicated Friday a decision on Stuart Park’s opening will be announced either Oct. 26 or 27.
