Museum artifacts for sale
Money raised will help the museum buy materials needed to better preserve its remaining artifacts
You can bring home part of Westbank’s past as the Westbank Museum holds its first yard sale Aug. 11-14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
When people donate items to the museum, they sign a contract that allows the museum to sell the artifact if they no longer have use for it or it’s not fitting their mission, as long as the profit goes to improve the museum.
Jaden Cormack, the Westbank Museum and visitor services co-ordinator, said they generally offer artifacts to other museums, cultural institutions or heritage sites first, but if they aren’t interested, the museum is allowed to sell them.
The yard sale will also give people the opportunity to see the museum’s new frontage.
Cormack said there will be a lot of collectible items for sale, including vintage books such as Bibles and cookbooks, kitchen appliances and utensils used before electricity and even an old organ.
Kids can check out the vintage games and there are 1950s-era pastel plastic cups and plates.
There is also lots of Royal family memorabilia including Charles and Diana items.
“We honestly have a little bit of everything,” said Cormack, adding there will be lots for people to browse through.
One thing treasure hunters won’t find will be clothing and accessories, items which are precious to the museum.
People stopping by the sale can also check out the hand-carved guitar that’s up for auction. The artist will be coming by the museum later in the week to record a video of him playing the instrument. The demonstration will be posted to social media so people will be able to hear its sound.
Money raised from the yard sale will go to the Westbank Museum.
The museum is currently working on a side compound beautification project.
Cormack said some of the money might also go toward materials the museum needs to better preserve artifacts.
The Westbank Museum is located at 2376 Dobbin Rd.
