Vernon ramps up fire preparations

- Staff

RCMP are sending additional officers to Vernon to help with police operations and wildfire efforts as the giant White Rock Lake Fire threatens the area.

The extra Mounties are there to help patrol evacuated neighbourhoods, assist with safe evacuations and with regular policing duties.

“We are asking people to be prepared to leave, to evacuate immediately if ordered to, to respect the road closures in place, adhere to instructions issued by emergency personnel, and to stay away from evacuated areas until they are notified that it is safe to return,” said RCMP spokesman Chris Terleski in a news release.

Local officials joined provincial calls for people to obey evacuation orders.

“The time to create an evacuation plan is now. The time to leave is when you receive an Evacuation Order. If you are under an evacuation alert, be ready to leave at a moment’s notice,” said a news release in which Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming urged people to be ready to leave.

“By staying after an evacuation order has been issued, you create a greater risk for yourself, your property and especially for the health and safety of firefighters and first responders working in the fire zone,” the release said.

Another release from the City of Vernon urged potential evacuees to make accommodation plans.

“It is being strongly recommended that residents not rely on the vacancy of commercial accommodations such as hotels and motels in the event of an evacuation … Creating alternative accommodation plans such as staying with family, friends or at public campsites could alleviate any additional stress brought on by an Evacuation Order.”

Evacuees should register at the Vernon ESS Reception Centre at the Dogwood Gym, 3409 35th Ave.
