“Chesapeake Shores” has been a family affair for Treat Williams in multiple ways.
In the Hallmark Channel and (in Canada) Super Channel Heart & Home drama series that’s now in its sixth and final season Sundays, the veteran of television’s “Everwood” and “Chicago Fire” – and in movies, “Prince of the City” and “Hair” – plays construction-firm owner and O’Brien family leader Mick. However, the leader above him is matriarch Nell, played by Diane Ladd ... whose daughter, Oscar winner Laura Dern, starred with Williams in the acclaimed 1985 feature “Smooth Talk.”
“Diane and I talk more about the present,” Williams says. “She has this movie she wants to direct, and she’s got this other film going on. She’s moving and shaking all the time. She’s an actress who likes to work.”
For “Smooth Talk,” Williams recalls, “The money was coming from public television to make these films. They’d say, ‘You can have it (for a theatrical run) for 18 months, then we get it in perpetuity,’ or vice versa. PBS would own it, then give it back to you, and it did very well.”
Williams also continues his recurring “Blue Bloods” role as Lenny Ross, Commissioner Frank Reagan’s (Tom Selleck) first partner, on the CBS police drama that starts its 13th season Oct. 7.
“They’ve given me some wonderful stuff,” Williams says of the series that also repeats on ION Television, UPtv and NewsNation. He notes Selleck is “such an easy partner to work with. He is such a delight. When we get on set, it’s just like two old pros hanging out ... talking about what we’re going to eat that night, mostly!”
