Sun’s winning ways anchored by merciless defence
On a roll after a series of lopsided scores in recent games, the Okanagan Sun defence showed no mercy during a 35-0 victory Saturday afternoon over the Prince George Kodiaks.
The excitement began before the game started when head coach Travis Miller benched star quarterback Dominic Britton in favour of backup Liam Kroeger, the team said in a media release.
According to the release, Kroeger dialled it in for the Sun early marching them down the field and allowing Jevon Garwood to rush for a one yard touchdown.
Mike O’Shea returned his third punt for a touchdown in as many weeks to extend the lead. Liam Attwood kicked a 37-yard field goal and missed a 40-yard field goal on which the Kodiaks conceded a single point making it 18-0 Sun in the second quarter.
Late in the second quarter after Mike O’Shea just missed returning his second punt for a touchdown, the Sun offence scored again. Rookie Aidan Wiberg got the ball and rumbled his way 11 yards for his second career touchdown making it 25-0 Sun. The Sun added one more touchdown late in the second quarter with QB Liam Kroeger finding Colton Peterson for a 30-yard reception to make it 32-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Kodiaks defence
denied the Sun offence in the third quarter with the only points being a safety for the Sun extending the lead to 34-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Sun earned a single point early in the fourth quarter after 45-yard punt from Isaac Wegner landed in the end zone making it 350 Sun. With under four minutes to go in the
game, the Kodiaks put together a drive inside Sun territory but would fail to score any points after failing to convert a third down.
The Sun earn themselves a bye week and return to the road Sept. 10 for a rematch with the Westshore Rebels.
Kickoff is at 4 p.m. in the Starlight Stadium in Langford.
