Lifelong labour advocate dies

-

The labour movement is mourning one of its own with the news that Doug Gibson died earlier this month.

“He did not leave quietly. That was not his style,” said Doug’s wife Louise Gibson. “If you heard the thunder and saw the lightning, on Aug. 22, you can be sure that was him making his exit.”

Gibson was born May 1, 1931, and is survived by Louise, his wife of 57 years, daughters Dianne and Cynthia and sons Brian and Gary.

“Louise, Dianne and Gary were holding his hand when he left us,” Louise added.

Gibson was a long time member of B.C. Federation of Retired Union Members in which he represented the North Okanagan Labour Council for the last 20 years.

He was a mentor to young and old alike and an advocate for any that requested help. He was a proud honourary lifetime member of the New Democratic Party, his wife said.

“His belief in social justice and fairness for all working people never varied,” she said. “Anyone that knew him was aware of his dedication and we will all remember his hundreds of stories over the years. ”

Gibson came from a large family which includes Marnie and Garrett Tanner of Kelowna, Lorrie Hogg from San Guido, Larry and Sharon from Red Deer, plus grandchildren, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The Gibson family thanked ICU staff at KGH. “We were all hoping for a miracle. We have been through it all together. Our friends, neighbours, those in the community that have offered hugs, love and done whatever they could whenever they could, thank you so very much,” Louise added. “Rest in peace my love until I join you down the road and we can organize another union shop together in the great beyond. ”

Cheryl Stone, with the North Okanagan Labour Council, said Gibson was involved with labour much of his life and organized many organizations.

“Those of us who knew Doug for so many years heard all of his wonderful long labour stories – most informative and humorous as well,” said Stone. “He actually educated most of us on the very beginnings of the labour movement in Canada.”
