Something to talk about: Bonnie Raitt playing here

- By JAMES MILLER

Blues guitarist Bonnie Raitt is including Penticton on her forthcoming Just Like That tour, one of 11 dates on her first Canada-wide tour in six years.

Raitt, with special guest Royal Wood, a Canadian rock musician, will perform at the South Okanagan Events Centre on Friday, Sept. 22.

Raitt’s first album was released in 1971 but she didn’t receive significant mainstream attention until a remake of Del Shannon’s Runaway (from her sixth album) cracked the Billboard pop charts in 1977, checking in at No. 57.

She enjoyed her greatest commercial success in her early 40s starting with 1989’s Nick of Time which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

Her 1991 follow up, Luck of the Draw, won three Grammy Awards and spawned the biggest hit of her career, Something to Talk About, penned by Canadian songwriter Shirley Elkhard. It climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In total, she’s won 10 Grammy Awards and was included in the 2000 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She was also named one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

Other recognizable songs by Raitt include a remake of Darlin’ from the Urban Cowboy soundtrack, Have a Heart, I Can’t Make You Love Me, Not the Only One, Love Sneakin’ Up on You, You Got It and Rock Steady, a duet with Bryan Adams.

As a founding member of the Musicians United for Safe Energy, she was featured in the No Nukes film and album performing Runaway and John Prine’s Angel from Montgomery. A champion for multiple social causes, she’s won numerous accolades for her humanitarian work.

Tickets for the Penticton show start at $60.50 plus tax and service charge and go on sale to the public on Friday at 10 a.m. at valleyfirsttix.ca and in person at the SOEC box office.
