Another Jammin’ Jazz Night in Summerland

-

Following the sold-out crowd with Larry Crawford and Friends, the series of fundraising jazz concerts continues at the Summerland Community Centre on Friday, March 31, to the sounds of the Monday Nite Jazz Friends.

MNJF comprises a core group of musicians and occasional guests under the leadership of trombonist Terry Grove. The name of the group simply comes from the weekly practice night.

MNJF formed a decade ago with the aim to enjoy playing group arrangements just for the love of it, but also to work on improvisation skills. With a library of over 250 pieces, they can play in any conformation from quartet to octet.

Repertoire includes mainstream jazz, vocal standards, Latin, Swing, Dixieland, Blues and Bop. MNJF loves to play for music lovers in the South Okanagan area, whether for listening pleasure or dancing.

Players at this session include Terry Grove, Mike Surkan on trumpet and flugal horn, Don Wade on baritone and soprano saxophones, Susan Norie on tenor saxophone, Lorie Grant on vocals, keyboard and flute, Rod Rose on drums, Graham Walker on bass, and Ken Tapping on guitar.

The concert will be at the Centre’s facilities, 9710 Brown Street, 7-9 p.m. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. to a cafe style ambience and with a cash bar for wine and beer. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at Artisans of the Okanagan, 13211A N. Victoria, or at the door.

The next concerts will be with the versatile Sound Company (So_Co) on April 28, the ever-popular South Okanagan Big Band on May 26, and “The Happiest Little Jazz Show Ever” with Sax Among Friends on June 23.
