MHC Rattlers to forgo winter competition

Medicine Hat College (MHC), along with several other provincial institutions, has made the collective decision to forgo competing in the 2021 ACAC winter season for basketball, volleyball, and futsal.

Kevin Shufflebotham, president and CEO of MHC, says the responsibility of colleges to establish and maintain a safe environment for students, staff and faculty is the preeminent factor in all considerations and decision-making.

“Institutions are now planning to deliver classes beginning in January 2021 in the same manner as we are in the Fall semester. Classes are being delivered by virtual means and pandemic precautions are enforced for any aspects of our programs that can only happen in person. We have recently agreed that athletic participation at our institutions will follow the same path.”

The decision to participate in future ACAC competition will be evaluated on a semester by semester basis, therefore the possibility exists that soccer, golf, and cross-country running may proceed in the spring.

“Our focus is always the wellbeing of learners, and it is important that we work with student athletes to ensure they succeed in their endeavors.

“We remain committed to giving Rattlers athletes the best possible experience in the current environment. As a result, team practices and training will continue in the winter semester, allowing athletes opportunities to develop their sport and leadership skills,” explains Shufflebotham.

With Rattlers Athletics playing an important role in the MHC experience, the absence of competition at the moment is felt by athletes, coaches, fans and our community.

“We look forward to the day we can return to the soccer pitch, the golf course, and the Snake Pit to cheer on our Rattlers. Until that time, we wish them all the best with their training and thank them for their continued commitment to sport.”
