At the Med. Hat College is the seminar: Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
Attending this two-day course will train you to intervene with an individual who is thinking about suicide. Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is an interactive workshop in suicide first aid develop by LivingWorks Education. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. It is by far the most widely used, acclaimed and researched suicide intervention training workshop in the world. This course will certify you for 3 years in suicide intervention. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop – anyone 18 or older can learn and use the ASIST model. This workshop is not recommended for people who have had a recent suicide loss. COST: FREE thanks to funding from the Government of Alberta (normally $210). Limited space available for professionals in the social services field. We know that when people are thinking about suicide they most often reach out for support from family and friends. This free training is being made available to increase suicide intervention skills in our community with a priority for general community members.
