Canada has not been kind to indigenous women and children

- BY STEVEN KASZAB Steven Kaszab is from Bradford, Ontario

The Story of The 215 will soon become the Story of the Thousands. Indigenous Women and Children that have historically been missing, to suddenly reappear in the most dastardly way.

Native Women and Children who have been taken from their families through foul play, addiction or administrative action. I will leave this to your imagination. Terrible things happen to good people. Those have faced challenges that many of us could not fathom no doubt. Racism, poverty, parental mismanagement. Parental mismanagement? Yes. The Indigenous People of North America have suffered the very worst childhood imaginable. The Federal Government, acting as their parents... protectors, educators and advisors have not nurtured their Children Well. That is what attitude you will see between The Indigenous and Society, a relationship of “Control”. Did Society love their Indigenous Children in the Past? Apparently Not. Does the Present Federal Government love The Indigenous People’s of Canada and The USA? Perhaps. The Federal Government is still trying to figure our what their children want, need, require. The Federal Government does not want to loose control after all. What happens when you loose control of children? Chaos.

I refer to The Indigenous Peoples of North America as “Children” for good reason. Proud People who were defeated by a Conquering North American society, driven to homelessness, poverty, starvation and hopelessness. The Indigenous Community has tried to maintain their traditions, language’s and Pride often with little help from their non-native neighbors.

Today they have a chance to accomplish something of great note. The Indigenous can become examples to their neighbors. They can defeat their loosing status, a conquered people, only to arise as a People of Peace and Progress. They can nurture their Canadian and American neighbors, bringing about REAL Reconciliation. The People of South Africa worked towards a reconciliation between the victim and their oppressors. Free Thinking won over Hatred, Fear and Prejudice. Apartheid was defeated and their society slowly transformed.

Every time I see a politician weep for Indigenous People, my stomach aches. Why can hypocrisy like this be allowed on the news channels, while the plight of Indigenous People throughout North America be placed onto the back covers of every newspaper. Lacking Clean water, housing, a chance to advance withing our society. Every Indigenous person who makes it did it by themselves. Hard work, determined advancement. They did not want to live on a reservation, being treated as a special case at school, work or before the justice system.

Could Indigenous People want what we all have? Canadian Society has every ethnic, racial and sexual demographic withing it spectrum and they are all pretty well accepted. No one more special than the other. Do Indigenous Society want to be one of us? Or do they want special status forever?

History has won this struggle so far. They were defeated, separated, and directed by their conquerors. History tells us they belong on reservations, that they can be manipulated, satisifed with limited advancements economically and politically. North American Society continues to give them trinkets, false benefits, while they loose control of their lands, their heritage and Pride.

Canadians/Americans can celebrate their society and its advancements. Our society continues to work towards equality in every aspect. Feel outraged by the horrible actions of the past directed towards not just Indigenous Peoples, but toward every other “different” member of our society.

Perhaps our Indigenous neighbors must decide who they really are. French Canadians seem to always bring up separation from Canada as a tool to effect Canada’s relations with that province. Is that what the indigenous will do, basically morally blackmail Canadians? I truly hope not. The Indigenous I know and have met are so very much Canadians. Can history have led Canadians and our Indigenous neighbors towards the establishment of a new, diferent Canada?

Love and understanding of Nature and our earth.

Communal - Individualistic understanding within society

Culture, humanistic relationships intertwined into one force.

Let us understand history without ignoring it. You cannot replace history.

You can teach and influence its understanding and how it will effect our society. Don’t topple statues, just send them where they belong...in museums.

We have seen terrible things done throughout history. We learn from these events and their long term effects upon us all.

Make history today. It’s not easy. We can change our part of the world only after we change ourselves.

“start with the man and woman in the mirror

I’m asking them to change their ways and no message could be clearer

If you wanna make the world a better place

Take a look at Yourself and then make a CHANGE”(thanks Michael J)
