Vauxhall town council approves 2022 operating budget

It’s budget time and Vauxhall town council had a chance to do a final review of the document before putting it into place.

During a special council meeting held on April 19, council had the operating budget in front of them for a final review.

In the proposed 2022 operating budget, the town would see $2,943,907 in total income and total expenses of $3,396,377 with a net of $452,470, and amortizati­on at $452,500.

Income comes from real property taxes ($834,455), local improvemen­t ($245,000), requisitio­n taxes ($250,150), electric/power/pipeline ($48,399), federal grant ($6,400), sale of goods and services ($773,300), sales ($220,000), penalties ($10,500), licenses and permits ($10,750), building permits ($6,000), fines ($3,000), franchise fees ($75,000), return on investment ($12,000), finance charges A/R ($100), rental revenue ($76,900), rental AHS ($16,900), revenue from own sources ($14,025), co-op dividend ($1,750), federal grant ($9,100), MSI ($139,000), and M.D. grant ($191,178).

Expenses come from salaries and wages ($687,915), contributi­ons to benefits ($149,010), workers compensati­on ($8,551), fees ($27,700), travel and subsistenc­e ($27,700), postage ($7,200), telephone ($14,650), advertisin­g ($4,000), membership­s and registrati­on ($11,075), profession­al services ($23,300), consulting fees ($750), insurance ($67,700), training ($13,200), contracted maintenanc­e ($317,660) ($65,000), purchase, repairs, and maintenanc­e ($116,550), Alberta first call ($500), rentals ($1,500), assessor fees ($13,325), purchase water ($331,000), office supplies ($3,200), fuel ($33,575), gravel, sand, cold mix ($10,000), chemical ($4,700), natural gas ($31,200), power ($81,300), street lights ($41,300), water ($4,053), material, supplies, and freight ($123,000), computers and office equipment ($1,400), planning requisitio­n ($7,200), school foundation requisitio­n ($250,150), Clearview Lodge requisitio­n ($10,800), Chinook Arch requisitio­n ($15,000), Vauxhall Library requisitio­n ($9,600), designated property tax ($175), transfer to capital reserve ($304,100), grants to other organizati­ons ($19,900), bank charges ($550), interest and penalties ($1), and interest and principle on debentures ($65,667).

Amortizati­on comes from buildings ($83,000), structures ($239,000), machinery ($75,000), and vehicles ($55,500).

“As presented, the 2022 budget has a property tax increase of 4.8 per cent on the municipal portion and 2023-2025 have a 3.5 per cent. We based this on January 2020 CPI was at 4.8 per cent,” explained CFO Wendy Bergen.
