Steady Cougars sweep Saskatchew­an

The University of Regina Cougars were a model of consistenc­y on Saturday.

The Cougars women’s volleyball team won three games by identical scores — 25-18, 25-18, 25-18 — against the Saskatchew­an Huskies at the Centre for Kinesiolog­y, Health and Sport.

Leah Shevkenek had 35 assists and a career-high seven kills for the Cougars, who got 13 kills and 10 digs from Chelsea Ziolkowski. The statistica­l double was Ziolkowski’s sixth of the season.

The Cougars’ Tori Glynn had seven kills and 10 digs. Michelle Sweeting added 10 kills.

Regina had defeated the visiting Saskatchew­an team in five sets on Friday. The Cougars won the final five sets of the series after losing two of the first three.

The Cougars improved their Canada West record to 6-12. Saskatchew­an (4-14) got seven kills and four blocks from Emily Humbert.

Next on the agenda for the Cougars are matches Friday and Saturday against the Alberta Pandas in Edmonton.

In Canada West men’s volleyball on Saturday, the Huskies swept the Cougars 25-17, 25-15, 25-22 at the CKHS.

Michael Corrigan had 24 assists for the Cougars (1-17), who got 18 digs from Jacques Borgeaud.

Borgeaud broke the Cougars’ three-set record for digs, which was previously establishe­d in 2011 when Lindsey Isaak had a 16-dig match.

Zak Rempel had 33 assists and Jordan Nowakowski registered 15 kills for Saskatchew­an (11-7), which is ranked 10th in the CIS.

The Cougars are to return to action Friday in Edmonton against the Alberta Golden Bears. The Golden Bears will also play host to the Cougars on Saturday.

The Huskies swept the visiting Cougars in Canada West women’s basketball on the weekend.

After winning 76-53 on Friday, the Huskies celebrated a 63-40 victory on Saturday.

Charlotte Kot led the Cougars with 13 points to close the two-game set. Alyssia Kajati had eight points and nine rebounds for the Cougars, who have a 10-4 record in conference play.

Regina-born Kabree Howard had 16 points and five assists for the Huskies (9-3), who are ranked fifth nationally.

The Cougars are now preparing for home games against the third-ranked Pandas on Friday and Saturday. Both games are set for 6 p.m., at the CKHS.

The ninth-ranked Huskies completed a sweep of Saturday’s basketball doublehead­er when they defeated the Cougars 88-80 in men’s action.

A second consecutiv­e loss in Saskatoon left the Cougars with a 7-7 record. The Huskies improved to 8-4.

Luther Lions alumnus Andrew Henry led the Huskies with 18 points.

Travis Sylvestre paced the Cougars with 17 points and seven rebounds.

Jonathan Tull (who had 13 points), Matthew Augustine (12), Brandon Tull (11) and Will Tallman (11) also scored in double figures for the visitors, who shot 55 per cent from the floor. The Huskies shot 54 per cent.

Regina is to play host to Alberta on Friday and Saturday at the CKHS. Both tipoffs are scheduled for 8 p.m.

The Manitoba Bisons had five second-period goals en route to a 6-1 Canada West women’s hockey victory over the Cougars on Saturday in Winnipeg.

Regina’s Alexis Larson scored the lone first-period goal. Thereafter, the Bisons got three power-play goals from Alanna Sharman, who added two assists. Alana Serhan, with two goals, and Michelle Pawluk also scored for the Bisons.

Manitoba goalie Amanda Schubert made 20 saves. Cougars goaltender­s Jennifer Schmidt and Toni Ross stopped a combined 27 shots.

A five-game losing streak has left the Cougars with a 10-9-1 conference record.

The Cougars are to play host to the UBC Thunderbir­ds on Friday and Saturday at the Co-operators Centre. Both games are to start at 7 p.m.
