Mr. D is up to his old tricks
The TV universe is constantly expanding, and new channels and shows vie for attention just as much as old favourites. Here are the best bets on the box.
Mr. D
As Season 4 of the sitcom opens, Gerry (Gerry Dee) is back at Xavier Academy, having made the calculated decision to turn down a physical education position at St. Pat’s. He vows to start investing more time and energy into his future, however — although the title of the season premiere, Mafia Dad, suggests he’s still going to face some unusual challenges. (CBC)
Dance Moms
Maddie heads to Los Angeles for an exciting new opportunity with Sia, but that just leaves the mothers questioning Abby’s dedication to this week’s routines since her favourite dancer is gone. They’re even less happy when Abby calls in JoJo as a substitute for Maddie, since her charisma is threatening to both the moms and the girls, in the new episode JoJo with a Bow Bow. (Lifetime Canada)
Schitt’s Creek
As the Roses struggle with the culture shock of their new community, Johnny (Eugene Levy) takes action to get a potentially offensive town sign taken down, while David (Dan Levy) faces the difficult challenge of finding a decent job. Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy also star in the new episode Don’t Worry It’s His Sister. (CBC)
MasterChef
What’s in the mystery box? The 12 young chefs still in the competition ponder that question in the new episode Junior Edition: Grandad Gordon! Another of their challenges isn’t as much a mystery, since they have to use ingredients that improve with age in recipes. The hour also answers another question: What is the “most dangerous protein?” (Fox, CTV Two)
Movie: Out of Africa
She had a farm in Africa and wrote about it so beautifully — under the pen name Isak Dinesen — that filmmaker Sydney Pollack crafted this lush, romanticized biography of Danish author Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep) and her 17 years on a Kenyan plantation. Robert Redford stars as her love interest, Denys Finch Hatton. The 1985 drama won seven Oscars, including best picture, best director and best original score. (TCM)
