From Carnegie Hall to Regina
Siblings bring classical music to audiences through new methods
Performing as Cheng2 Duo, siblings Silvie and Bryan Cheng will play in Regina as part of the Cecilian Concert Series on Nov. 21 at KnoxMetropolitan Church.
Silvie Cheng, a pianist, and Bryan Cheng, a cellist, have committed to bringing classical music to 21stcentury audiences through innovative programming and engaging presentations. Gifted as soloists, the siblings joined forces as Cheng2 Duo—pronounced Ch eng Squared — in 2011 for a recital at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in New York City. Over the past five years they have performed throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
Silvie Cheng made her orchestral debut in 2008, performing the Schuman Piano Concerto at Ottawa’s Centrepointe Theatre. She earned her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees at the Manhattan School of Music. She also has an Associated Piano Performance Diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto.
She has been a teaching artist at the Manhattan School of Music’s Distance Learning Program since 2013. In addition to maintaining a private teaching studio in New York City, she is also a teaching artist with the Bridge Arts Ensemble.
Bryan Cheng made his orchestral debut at the age of 10 with the Musici de Montreal Chamber Orchestra. He is currently working on his Bachelor’s degree at the Universitat der Kunste in Berlin.
He plays a rare 1754 cello by Bartolommeo Tassini of Venice Italy.
The duo announced recently that they would be recording their debut album in February 2016 in Berlin. On Oct. 21, they began a 40-day kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the project which will feature French classical, romantic and impressionist music.
