Life lessons from Lochte

- DOUG CAMILLI

Ryan Lochte has lost as much as US$1 million in endorsement deals since his little fiasco in Rio, E!Online reports.

At least four companies have ended sponsorship pacts with the U.S. swimmer after he got caught in a lie about what happened at that gas station. (All these contracts nowadays have good-behaviour loopholes.)

Speedo canned him, but donated “a $50,000 portion” of his fee to a Brazilian charity. Ralph Lauren says its deal with Lochte was just for Rio and won’t be renewed. Syneron Candela, makers of GentleLase hair removal system, dropped him. And Airweave, a mattress company, said it won’t renew his deal.

His teammates aren’t too happy, either.

So let this be a lesson to you: It’s not the shenanigans that get you in trouble, it’s the coverup. More from Margot Robbie’s interview with Harper’s Bazaar, this time about her drinking habits: “Whenever someone makes me a cup of tea, I’m like, ‘Imagine you’re making it for a small child — really milky and sweet.’

“I probably drink at least 10 teas a day. In our family, a cup of tea is the answer to everything. When you walk in, you get offered a cup of tea. If something goes wrong, someone will be like, ‘I’ll make you a cup of tea.’ If something good happens, they will be like, ‘Great! We’ll make you a cup of tea.’ ” Eddie Murphy tells the Hollywood Reporter about that time he was hanging out with some other comic actors.

“(John) Belushi and Robin Williams offered me some blow and I didn’t take it, and Belushi called me a tight-ass. … Years later, I was like, ‘Wow, that’s a trip.’”

Belushi died of an overdose in 1982. Williams had been in a rehab centre not long before his suicide in 2014. Murphy is still going. “I don’t drink. I don’t have like this moral thing about it, I just don’t do it,” he said, adding he doesn’t use drugs, either. He’s 55. Nicole Scherzinger spent many years with Formula One champ Lewis Hamilton, but now thinks tennis star Grigor Dimitrov, her new boyfriend, is Mr. Right.

“We’ve been together for quite some time now, so I’m just living in the moment and I’m happy,” she told the weekend magazine of The Sun, a British paper. “It’s good when you’re both career-driven to have your own space to focus on your career and yourself.”

So is this love? “Yeah, I hope so. I’m a very loving person.”

She’s 38. Grigor’s 25.
