Wet, windy weekend expected across Sask.

-

The first weekend of fall is expected to be a wet and windy one across much of the province.

A “large and slow-moving storm system” over the western United States was moving toward Saskatchewan and Manitoba on Thursday, bringing with it “a prolonged period of rain,” according to a statement from Environment Canada.

Between 15 and 25 millimetres of rain was expected by Thursday night in some parts of the province, after the system pushed into southwest Saskatchewan Thursday morning. According to Environment Canada, rain will “become more widespread” today and continue through into Saturday before tapering off from west to east on Sunday.

According to Environment Canada, most of the areas in the path of the storm could receive between 30 and 50 millimetres by Saturday night; some areas in the northeast may receive as much as 50 to 80 millimetres.

The storm is forecast to hit Prince Albert and surrounding areas all the way south to the Canada-U.S. border, with only the Battlefords and area, along with the Kindersley-Rosetown area, forecast to avoid the system.

Rainfall warnings could be issued for areas that receive 50 millimetres or more within 24 hours, or 75 millimetres or more within 48 hours.

In addition to the rain, “strong northwest winds are expected to develop behind this storm system” starting Saturday and into Sunday, Environment Canada said, with gusts of wind reaching up to 60 or 70 kilometres per hour.
