Lowry named female athlete of week in CIS after shutouts

Ashton Lowry, a member of the University of Regina Cougars soccer team, was named the CIS female athlete of the week Thursday.

She was earlier named Canada West first star of the week after posting back-to-back shutouts — blanking the Winnipeg Wesmen 1-0 on Saturday before the Cougars tied the Manitoba Bisons 0-0 on Sunday.

The victory on Saturday was her first in Canada West.

The U of R women’s softball team swept Briercrest College in a doublehead­er in Moose Jaw on Wednesday, winning 16-0 and 17-0.

In the opener, Morgan Jeannot, Carmen Hughes and Mckenzie Acton had home runs for the U of R. Destiny Kaus had three hits for Regina in the latter game.

The Balgonie Greenall Griffins defeated the O’Neill Titans 24-13 in Wednesday’s lone Regina Intercolle­giate Football League game.

It was the Griffins’ first-ever victory over O’Neill.

The seventh-annual Mandi Schwartz Challenge female hockey tournament is to be held Friday to Sunday at the Co-operators Centre. It is being presented by the Saskatchew­an Hockey Associatio­n and the Cougars women’s hockey team.

The tournament will double as the final selection phase for the Saskatchew­an team that is to compete at the Canadian women’s under-18 championsh­ip (Nov. 9-13, Evraz Place).
