American Masters
On the anniversary of Malcolm X’s assassination, American Masters airs the documentary Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, from directors Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn Whack.
The two-hour broadcast highlights the work that the two did together and features interviews with people such as Oprah Winfrey, Common, Quincy Jones, John Singleton, Diahann Carroll and Angelou herself, filmed just before her death in 2014.
“(Maya Angelou) was a gift to all of us who knew her,” former U.S. president Bill Clinton said last week at an event honouring the film in Harlem, N.Y. The Clintons were friends of Angelou’s for decades and are also featured in the documentary.
Angelou is best known for her 1969 autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, though she also was a singer, dancer, civil rights activist and poet. She was born in St. Louis, and during her life amassed honours including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, three Grammy Awards, the National Medal of Arts and a Pulitzer Prize nomination.
Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise is available on DVD today and on Digital HD tomorrow via PBS Distribution. (PBS)
