GET READY FOR RHETT

Country star’s tour hits city

- JEFF DEDEKKER

Fresh off two big victories at the Academy of Country Music Awards, Thomas Rhett is bringing his Home Team tour to the Brandt Centre on May 8.

Rhett won male vocalist of the year and song of the year (for Die A Happy Man) at the ACMs on April 1. Rhett is a relative newcomer to the country music scene with two studio albums to his credit. He has developed an international following and for music fans who might know Rhett and his music, here’s a few tidbits that might help out:

Monday’s show won’t be his

first appearance in the Regina area. Rhett performed at the 2014 Craven Country Jamboree, leading into Luke Bryan, the Friday night headliner. Rhett’s 14-song set included the Garth Brooks hits Friends In Low Places.

Rhett has released a total of 10

singles from his two studio albums (It Goes Like This and Tangled Up) with seven reaching No. 1 on the country charts — It Goes Like This; Get Me Some Of That; Make Me Wanna; Crash And Burn; Die A Happy Man; T-shirt; and, Star Of The Show.

Rhett’s songwriting ability

shouldn’t be a surprise given his father is Rhett Akins, a renowned Nashville songwriter. Akins has written hits for the likes of Blake Shelton, Brooks & Dunn, Joe Nichols, Luke Bryan, Justin Moore and Chris Young. In addition to recording It Goes Like This and Get Me Some Of That, both which were co-written by Akins, Rhett also cowrote

Star Of The Show with Akins.

Rhett is currently working on ■ finishing his third album, which will feature his current single Craving You (which features Maren Morris). The album is also scheduled to include a duet with Selena Gomez. In a press release from the Big Machine Label Group, Rhett said: “I took all of January and made album three. We cut 22 songs, which is way too many songs, and I think the next few months is going to be singing all those, getting them all mixed and then trying to narrow down which ones are the keepers. But it’s really all over the place. There’s a lot of cool collaborations on the record. My dad is actually featured on the record, which is pretty cool. I’m trying to single-handedly revive his ’90s country music career. But uh, no, it’s gonna be a fun record.”

The Home Team tour is Rhett’s ■ first as a headliner, although he did share the headlining role with Brett Eldredge for the Suits & Boots tour in 2015. Rhett has toured as an opening act with Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean (twice), Florida Georgia Line and Miranda Lambert.
