Time capsule at Mosaic to be opened in 2067
Package to be opened in 2067 will hold letters, photos, posters
If you’re the betting type, you may want to think about writing down your predictions for the new Mosaic Stadium.
Fifty years from now, 2067 Regina residents can tell you if you were right.
The city has plans to bury a time capsule in Confederation Park on June 30 to celebrate the new Mosaic Stadium and the renewal of Confederation Park.
Kim Onrait, executive director of city services and major projects with the City of Regina, said residents are encouraged to write letters for the capsule about what the new stadium means to them and what they think it will be like in 50 years. Letter writers can also talk about what the city in general.
The letters will be reviewed by the city and the best ones chosen to go into the time capsule, said Onrait. The city will also include things like a June 30 newspaper, construction timelines and photos of the new stadium, ticket stubs and concert posters.
Regina Mayor Michael Fougere and Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall will also write letters, along with someone from Evraz Place and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Onrait said the time capsule was ordered from a time capsule company to ensure it would last the full 50 years underground. He said he isn’t sure exactly how big it is, but can confidently say it’s “probably bigger than a bread box,” but “we don’t need a crane to put it in the ground.”
The Confederation Park renewal is currently underway. New walkways into the park as well as an art project that details its history are some of the things being added, and will be finished in time for the ceremony on the morning of June 30.
More details about the timing of the ceremony will be released closer to the date. Letters must be 500 words or less and submitted online. No print or film submissions will be accepted.
