City looks at upgrading pumping station
With continued development in southeast Regina, the time has come to upgrade the wastewater pumping station at The Creeks. To begin the process, city administration is looking for approval from council to receive proposals for the design and construction of the expansion. The upgrade will increase the overall capacity of the pumping station.
“This expansion is required due to the continued growth in the Greens and Creek neighbourhoods,” said Dustin McCall, manager of development engineering. “It is all related to growth in east Regina. As these neighbourhoods grow, we require engineering modelling as part of the review process.”
Another reason for the expansion of the pumping station is the risk for wastewater to discharge into Chuka Creek at the location of the pumping station. The expansion of the station will prevent this from happening by reducing the risk of wastewater overflowing into the creek.
“The upgrades will help in the prevention of that,” said McCall. “To my knowledge, (a spill) has not happened at this time. The original design did have discharge to the creek but the storage component will prevent that.”
The work will include a new cast in place concrete off-line storage tank, two additional pumps to increase capacity, putting in a second force main and surface drainage improvements.
It is expected that the proposal will be awarded in September, with a design provided by engineers between October and March. Depending on the design, construction could start between 2018 and 2019. The total cost on the project, including design and construction, is estimated to be $1.2 million.

For now, the Creeks Wastewater Pumping Station is the only major pumping station project planned by the city. “It will only be The Creeks lift station that will be upgraded in the near future,” McCall said. “We will move into construction but we don’t know if it will be in phases or all at once and that will be in 2018 into 2019.”
