Saskatchewan wins gold medal in handball
Saskatchewan won the Canadian junior men’s handball championship Sunday at the Sportplex.
In the gold-medal game, Saskatchewan defeated Alberta 25-23.
Jonathan Pituley and Michael Pituley,
both of Regina, won the Saskatchewan men’s pairs lawn bowling championship Sunday in Saskatoon. Keith Roney and fellow Reginan Murray Pituley were third.
In women’s pairs, Hariette Pituley of Regina teamed with Saskatoon’s Rachel Larson to win the title. Both victorious pairs will advance to the national championships Aug. 13-19 in Victoria.
Michael Middlemiss of Regina placed
second among men in the half-marathon at the Manitoba Marathon in Winnipeg on Sunday. He also won the men’s 25-29 age group. Kevin Petrychyn was second in the men’s 30-34 division. Gary Larson, also of Regina, was third in the men’s 40-44 classification.
In the full marathon, Regina’s Jan Steenkamp was 41st in the men’s 50-54 age group.
The Regina Red Sox return
to action Tuesday, 7:05 p.m., against the Melville Millionaires at Pirie Field. The next night, Regina will play host to the Weyburn Beavers in a Western Major Baseball League game.
The game against Weyburn begins a four-game home stand for the Red Sox, who are to play host to the Edmonton Prospects on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, the Red Sox will entertain the Moose Jaw Miller Express. Those Red Sox home games are to begin at 7:05 p.m. at Currie Field.
Saskatchewan’s North American Indigenous Games
under-16 midget lacrosse team defeated the South Saskatchewan Barracuda elite team 5-4 on Saturday at the Al Ritchie Memorial Centre.
