First-place Red Sox set to visit Weyburn

The Regina Red Sox carry a 14-6 record, good for first place in the Western Major Baseball League’s East Division, into Wednesday’s road game against the Weyburn Beavers.

The first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., at Tom Laing Park.

On Monday, the Red Sox defeated the Melville Millionair­es 10-2 before a season-high crowd of 926 at Currie Field.

Jordan Schulz had a first-inning home run for Regina, which got two hits and two RBI from Broderick Rodocker, and three-hit performanc­es from Nolan Ard and Justin Erlandson. Will Moore was the winning pitcher.

After Wednesday’s game, the Red Sox will play back-to-back home games against the Swift Current 57’s. The games are set for Thursday and Friday, 7:05 both nights, at Currie Field.

Leslie Fowler of Regina and Randy Wihlidal of Balgonie were among the 14 Service Award recipients when the Saskatchew­an High Schools Athletic Associatio­n held its annual meeting on the weekend in Humboldt.

Also honoured were Chris Sharp (Maple Creek), Sherry SaxtonRich­ards (Assiniboia), Trent Johnson (Carlyle), Sheldon Kaminski (Langenburg), Darren Gasper (Kenaston), Jerome Linnell (Melfort), Carrie Ikert (Prince Albert), Darin Faubert (Wadena), Jack Nepjuk (Saskatoon), Lane Buswell (Spiritwood), Kendra Paramchuk (Meadow Lake) and Sandra Schatz (Dalmeny).

Also, SHSAA Merit Awards — the associatio­n’s highest honour — were presented to Rick Haacke of Melville, Richard Rink of Wynyard and Valerie Gordon of Eastend.

Ray Amyotte homered twice to help Best Buds defeat Chetty’s Pretty Boys 12-5 in Western Cycle Rambler Park Fastball League action Monday.

Tony Cappo, the winning pitcher, struck out seven in five innings. B.L. Sparvier homered for the Pretty Boys.

Also on Monday, Xavier Tremblay had seven strikeouts in five innings and Kent Barber homered as the Moose Jaw Canadians blanked the Piapot Wolfpack 9-0.

Brenda Anderson was the winning pitcher as the Thunder defeated the Mystics 8-2 in Regina Ladies Softball Associatio­n action Monday.

Also on Monday at Douglas Park, it was: Elite Auto Body 10, Thunder 9; Lumsden Cubs 8, Rampage 8; and, Fision 7, Elite Auto Body 5.
