Pankewich heads to provincial baseball hall of fame

Don Pankewich of Regina is to be inducted in the Saskatchew­an Baseball Hall of Fame on Aug. 19 in Battleford.

Pankewich has been active in the Saskatchew­an baseball scene since the 1960s as a player, coach and umpire. His 48-year career as an umpire began at age 10. He has officiated local, regional, provincial and national championsh­ips in addition to working as an umpirein-chief at various levels.

Pankewich served as president and groundskee­per of Optimist Park in Regina for 10 years and was instrument­al in the formation of the Optimist junior league. He has also been involved with the Qu’Appelle Valley Senior Baseball League for 45 years, serving as commission­er the last 10 years.

Pankewich has also been a driving force behind the Prairie Junior Hockey League’s Regina Capitals as a coach, manager and governor. He serves as the club’s alternate governor and sits on the PJHL executive and nomination committee.

Battling windy conditions at the Lloydminst­er Golf and Country Club, Kim Walker of Regina dropped out of the lead on Wednesday in Round 2 of the Saskatchew­an amateur women’s championsh­ip.

Walker shot a 10-over-par 82, giving her a two-day total of 155. She sits just one shot back of the leader, Saskatoon’s Julia Dereniwsky, who shot a 79 Tuesday.

Regina’s Tamara Harasen paced the field with a 74 and sits four shots back of the lead heading into Thursday’s final round.

Also in Lloydminst­er, Tyler Wright of Regina fired a threeover 75 Wednesday to put himself in contention at the Saskatchew­an mid-amateur men’s championsh­ip.

Wright’s two-day total of 150 puts him in a tie for fifth, just three shots back of leader Scott Allan of Saskatoon. First-round leader Shawn McNall of Regina dropped to ninth with a second-round 81. His 152 total is five shots back.

The Regina Red Sox will complete a three-game home stand Thursday, 7:05 p.m., at Currie Field against the Moose Jaw Miller Express.

Regina carried a 17-8 record — tops in the Western Major Baseball League’s Eastern Division — into Wednesday night’s home game against Moose Jaw.

On Tuesday, the Red Sox defeated the visiting Yorkton Cardinals 9-1. Antonio Torres hit his first WMBL home run for the Red Sox, who got a double and a triple from Justin Erlandson. Walker McCleney homered for Yorkton.

Jacob Kydd of Regina was the firstround leader at the Future Links Prairie Championsh­ip golf event at Estevan’s Woodlawn Golf Club.

Kydd shot a 4-under 68 during Tuesday’s opening round. Tayden Wallin of Humboldt was second at 70, followed by Kade Johnson of Yorkton and Ryan McMillan of Winnipeg at 71. The three-round event concludes Thursday.

The Sleek split a doublehead­er Tuesday in the Regina Ladies Softball Associatio­n. The Kaos posted a 4-3 victory over the Sleek, which edged the Earl Grey Heat 8-7.

Also on Tuesday at Douglas Park, it was: Wheat Country Extreme 8, Earl Grey 0; Edge 8, Saints 6; and, Mystics 13, Ochapowace 7.

Dwayne Redman Jr. struck out 14 in six innings, allowing four hits, to lead the Standing Buffalo Dakotas to a 7-0 victory over the Piapot Padres in the Western Cycle Rambler Park Fastball League Tuesday.

Standing Buffalo’s Keegan Sparvier, who had three hits, got on base every time he was at bat and also stole a base. Vern Kaiswatum added two hits for the Dakotas.
