Cougars centre to play for Canada

University of Regina Cougars centre Angela Bongomin has been named to the Canadian team that is set to compete at the FIBA under-19 women’s basketball World Cup in Italy.

“We’re really excited for Angela for making the team — it’s a great opportunit­y for her to grow as a player and represent our program and the university,” Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said in a media release. “Being able to play for your country on an internatio­nal stage is a tremendous honour and we know Angela will make the most of it.”

Bongomin was a member of the national under-18 team last year that finished with a 4-1 record at the FIBA Americas under-18 championsh­ip in Chile to qualify for this year’s World Cup.

Also named to the under-19 team was University of Saskatchew­an Huskies guard Libby Epoch, who’s from Moose Jaw.

Team Canada opens the tournament July 22 against Korea.

Bongomin, a Regina native, has also been invited to try out for the Canadian team that will compete next month at the FISU Summer Universiad­e in Taiwan.

Justin Erlandson’s three-run homer powered

the Regina Red Sox to a 9-0 Western Major Baseball League victory over the Moose Jaw Miller Express on Thursday at Currie Field.

Corey Henderson (who had a two-run single) and Aden Campbell (four hits, one RBI) were also notable contributo­rs to the Red Sox offence.

Jake Waters, the winning pitcher, allowed three hits and two walks in seven innings before relievers Preston Minor and Justin Magstadt preserved the shutout.

The Red Sox carried an Eastern Division-leading 19-8 record into Friday’s road game against the Yorkton Cardinals. Regina is to return to action Sunday, 2:05 p.m., against Moose Jaw at Ross Wells Park.

Garth Zummack and Murray Pituley

of Regina teamed up with Saskatoon’s Gary Laurence to win the Saskatchew­an senior men’s triples title at the Regina Lawn Bowling Club on Thursday. As a result, the trio qualified for the Canadian championsh­ips next month in Peterborou­gh, Ont.

On the women’s side, Janice Robson, Liz Jones and Lorraine Schneider of Regina qualified for the national event by virtue of their second-place finish in this week’s provincial playdowns.

Marty Watson had two hits

and three RBI for the Chetty’s Pretty Boys in their 9-2 victory over the Moose Jaw Giants in Western Cycle Rambler Park Fastball League action Thursday.

Winning pitcher Justice Keshane struck out six in five innings.

Also on Thursday at Rambler Park, the Piapot Wolfpack defeated the Muskowekwa­n Pride 6-2. Winning pitcher Vance Thompson struck out six in six innings.

Yorkton’s Kade Johnson finished second

in the Future Links Prairie Championsh­ip golf event in Estevan.

Johnson shot a third-round 72 on Thursday for a total of 215, finishing four shots behind the winner, Ryan McMillan of Winnipeg.

The Rampage registered a pair

of 10-2 victories over the Earl Grey Heat in the Regina Ladies Softball Associatio­n on Thursday.

Lindsay O’Watch and Jenna Tanner were the winning pitchers.

In Thursday’s other game at Douglas Park, Ochapowace edged the Raiders 20-19.
