Sask. secures spot in football final

Saskatchew­an is to play Quebec on Friday in the championsh­ip game of the Football Canada Cup in Wolfville, N.S.

The game will be a rematch of last year’s final, won 25-8 by Quebec in Winnipeg.

Saskatchew­an advanced to Friday’s final by edging Ontario 11-9 in a semifinal on Tuesday.

The big play for Saskatchew­an was a 28-yard touchdown pass from Josh Donnelly to Bennett Stusek, the latter of whom was named his team’s offensive player of the game. Emmett Steadman added a field goal and two singles for Saskatchew­an.

Linebacker Joshua White was Saskatchew­an’s defensive player of the game.

Quebec defeated Alberta 13-12 in the other semifinal.

The Weyburn Beavers allowed only three hits in Tuesday’s 4-1 Western Major Baseball League victory over the Regina Red Sox at Currie Field.

Beavers starter Austin Gurr pitched seven innings, allowing one run, two hits and a walk while striking out three. Lance Fazende pitched the eighth inning for Weyburn. Eric Evans closed out the game.

Red Sox starter Austin Alarid pitched 72/3 innings, allowing four walks, eight hits and three earned runs while striking out 11. Alarid threw 127 pitches.

Weyburn’s Luis Jimenez went 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Antonio Torres had a hit and a walk for Regina, which carried a 20-11 record into Wednesday’s home game against the Yorkton Cardinals.

Weyburn is to play host to the Red Sox on Thursday, 7:05 p.m., at Ross Wells Park. The Red Sox are in Yorkton Friday night for a 7:05 game at Century Field.

Regina’s next home game is Sunday, 2:05 p.m., against the Melville Millionair­es.

Dustin Keshane pitched a complete-game no-hitter — registerin­g all 21 of his outs via strikeouts — as the Little Black Bear Blues tied the Moose Jaw Canadians 1-1 in Western Cycle Rambler Park Fastball League action Tuesday.

Moose Jaw pitcher Xavier Tremblay also had a strong game, allowing two hits and striking out 14 in seven innings.

Also Tuesday, the Moose Jaw Giants scored 11 second-inning runs en route to a 13-1 victory over the Piapot Wolfpack. Dale Garthus was the winning pitcher.

In Tuesday’s other game, Myles Strongeagl­e had four RBIs for the Pasqua A’s in their 8-6 victory over the Regina Gold. Winning pitcher Wacey Strongeagl­e struck out 10 in seven innings, allowing a homer by Chris Bailey. The Gold’s Stephen Kwasnicki struck out seven in six innings.

Lorinda Howden homered to help the Extreme edge the Kaos 9-8 in Regina Ladies Softball League action Tuesday. Jaycee Cale homered for the Kaos.

In other action Tuesday at Douglas Park, Carmen Hughes was the winning pitcher as the Sleek defeated the Rampage 6-1. The Sleek also posted a 3-3 tie versus the Lumsden Cubs while Piapot defeated the Storm 17-9.
