U of S employee set to run for the NDP in byelection
Vicki Mowat lost by fewer than 200 votes in Saskatoon Fairview riding in 2016
Saskatchewan’s Opposition NDP has selected former MLA candidate Vicki Mowat to represent the party in the upcoming Saskatoon Fairview byelection.
Mowat was the NDP candidate during the 2016 provincial election, when she lost to Saskatchewan Party incumbent Jennifer Campeau by fewer than 200 votes. She beat two other candidates for the nomination: Chris Sicotte, who works as the business development manager of Indigenous partnerships with Affinity Credit Union, and Saskatoon educator Keith Jorgenson.
“The Sask. Party has made heartless cuts to the services people rely on in this province and people are fed up,” Mowat said in a release. “This byelection is an opportunity for the people of this constituency to send a clear message that the Sask. Party needs to stop making Saskatchewan people pay the price for their mismanagement, scandal and waste.”
Mowat works as the executive assistant to the associate dean of Aboriginal affairs at the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Arts and Science. She previously worked as a sessional lecturer in sociology at the U of S.
Cameron Scott, a former corrections officer and a trustee with the Saskatoon public school board, was acclaimed in July as the Saskatchewan Party candidate. His official nomination is expected to happen at a meeting on Aug. 2.
David Prokopchuk, who ran for the Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan in the Saskatoon Meewasin byelection in March, has also announced his intention to seek the nomination for the PCs. The party has scheduled a nomination meeting on Aug. 3.
Saskatoon Fairview opened up after Campeau, who was first elected in 2011, stepped down in June to join the private sector. No date has been set for a byelection which must be held within six months of the seat becoming available.
