Dolphins’ McGillivra­y sets provincial record

Michael McGillivra­y of the Regina Optimist Dolphins Swim Club broke his own provincial record Wednesday at the Canadian junior nationals in Toronto.

McGillivra­y posted a time of 16 minutes, 29.39 seconds while finishing seventh in the 13- and 14-year-old boys 1,500-metre freestyle. He set the previous mark of 16:38.14 in April. Ryan Wagner struck out 12 in seven innings to help the Regina Reds defeat the Regina Angels 7-4 in Optimist Junior Baseball League playoff action Wednesday at Optimist Park.

The Reds’ Ryker Toffan went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Gage Wendel drove in two runs for the Angels.

The playoffs are to conclude Sunday with a threeteam round robin at Optimist Park. Games are set for 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The Regina Thunder’s training camp is to begin Friday at Scotty Livingston­e Field. The PFC team’s first practice is set for 7 p.m.

Saturday’s and Sunday’s sessions are to begin at 8 a.m. and noon.

Ken Rodgers of the Tor Hill carried a four-stroke lead into Thursday’s final round of the Saskatchew­an senior men’s golf championsh­ip in Lloydminst­er.

Rodgers shot a 2-underpar 142 over the first two rounds. Dave Wilson of North Battleford was next in line at 146. Rick Ledingham of the Wascana Country Club was third at 149.

After two rounds of the Saskatchew­an senior women’s championsh­ip, also in Lloydminst­er, hometown golfer Jo-Anne Schiller and Moose Jaw’s Lorie Boyle were tied for the lead at 166 after two rounds. Tammy Bezaire of Hague was one stroke off the pace.

Ochapowace 14-7 in Regina Ladies Softball Associatio­n action Wednesday at Douglas Park. Emily Cairns earned the pitching decision over Geneen Sparvier.
