Pitcher powers Pirates to title

Led by Cole Paquin, the Regina Pirates defeated the Regina Reds 10-3 on Sunday at Optimist Park to win the Optimist Junior Baseball League title.

Paquin struck out 13 and allowed only three hits while helping his cause by going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Randy Orchard had two RBIs and scored the Reds’ other run.

In a semifinal, the Reds edged the Moose Jaw Regals 2-1. Winning pitcher Ryan Wagner struck out 11 and allowed five hits.

Alfie Bear had two home runs to power the Chetty’s Pretty Boys to an 11-4 victory over the Pasqua A’s in Western Cycle Rambler Park Fastball League action Monday.

Winning pitcher Justice Keshane struck out 10 in six innings.

Also on Monday at Rambler Park, Dean Holoien struck out 16 in seven innings as the Moose Jaw Canadians defeated Silver Screen Sportswear 9-3.

Both games were openers of best-of-three Division 1 quarter-finals.

Madison Gerome was the winning pitcher as the Sleek defeated the Rampage 7-2 in Regina Ladies Softball Associatio­n Division 1 playoff action Monday at Douglas Park.

In a Division 2 playoff game, Lindsay O’ Watch got the win as the Saints edged the Vipers 5-4.

Regina’s Ken Rodgers is the 2017 Saskatchew­an senior men’s golf champion.

Rodgers, from the Tor Hill, shot a 1-under-par 215 over three rounds at the North Battleford Golf and Country Club. Rick Ledingham of the Wascana Country Club was second, 12 strokes off the pace, when the tournament concluded Thursday.

Lloydminst­er’s Jo-Anne Schiller won the provincial senior women’s title by shooting a 24-over-par 246. Tammy Bezaire of Hague and Lorie Boyle of Moose Jaw were tied for second, three strokes behind Schiller.

Jaycee Magwood of the University of Regina Cougars women’s hockey team is part of a U Sports all-star team that will participat­e in Hockey Canada’s Summer Showcase, which runs from Saturday until Aug. 13 in Calgary.

The U Sports all-stars will play two games against Hockey Canada’s national women’s developmen­t team and two more against the Japanese national women’s squad.

Magwood has been a Canada West all-star in both of her seasons with the Cougars. She was the conference’s rookie-ofthe-year award for 201516.

Regina defeated the Saskatoon Kirin 73-22 in a women’s rugby match Saturday at Regina Rugby Park.
