21 new foods to try this year
The Queen City Ex has brought a fresh slate of food items to the city this year with 21 new items to try. Ashley Robinson did some sampling and picked five of the best and most interesting foods at the Ex, which runs through Sunday.
PTERODACTYL WINGS
The Caveman Club and Grill has brought a true messy caveman dish to this year’s Ex. The pterodactyl wing is a roasted, braised turkey wing. It is fried to have a crisp skin and then dunked in the Caveman Club and Grill’s signature barbecue sauce.
“Usually we put it on a plate because it’s quite tender and they don’t stay on a stick very long. And people get disappointed when it falls on the ground,” said Simon Hellyer, owner of Caveman Club and Grill.
ICE CREAM WAFFLE TACO
The ice cream waffle taco is served at Deep Fried Steve-O’s Public House. It starts with the taco shaped waffle cone. Cookies and cream ice cream is then placed inside it, with whipped cream from an aerosol spray can on top. To finish it off, there are rainbow sprinkles and Oreo crumbs tossed over top.
“We melt (the ice cream) and then put it on the machine and then roll it with a spatula. And we put like three or four rolls inside of the waffle taco,” said Nadya Duarninco, worker at Deep Fried Steve O’s Public House.
DOUBLE BACON MAC AND CHEESE DOG
The double bacon mac and cheese dog is a foot-long hotdog available at the Super Foot Long Hot Dogs booth. The hotdog is wrapped in bacon and topped with (optional) fried onions and placed in a bun. The hotdog is topped off with mac and cheese.
“It’s a handmade cheese sauce with bacon in it and obviously seasoning. And then we put bread crumbs on top and green onion on top,” said Greta James, worker at Super Foot Long Hot Dogs.
TOASTED S’MORE MARSHMALLOW SHAKE
Available at the Next Gen Concessions milkshake stand the toasted s’more marshmallow shake is a take on the classic chocolate milkshake. The cup is drizzled in caramel sauce with a graham cracker rim. There is then a classic chocolate milkshake inside, topped with whipped cream, roasted marshmallows and more caramel sauce.
THE REUBEN CORN DOG
Served at Wiggle Chips, the Reuben corn dog is a specially made corned beef hot drop wrapped in Swiss cheese encased in corn dog breading. To accompany it is a sauerkraut aioli.
“The idea behind the Reuben dog was almost do basically as a Reuben sandwich so with corn beef, the sauerkraut and the Swiss cheese. So we came up with finding a way to be able to bring the corn beef in a wiener,” said Derek Collins, owner of Wiggle Chips.
