Regina Leader-Post

Commerce never part of Wascana

- Anna Gardikiotis, Regina

A recent story on the front page of the Leader Post (June 21) about the Conexus office building to be constructed adjacent to Darke Hall and within the boundaries of Wascana Park raises questions that should be of concern to all Regina citizens.

The architect of the project, James Youck, took to the defensive by stating that “the original intention of the park was that it would be lined with commercial ventures.” Perhaps someone, at some time, mused about such possibilities, but the words of the Wascana Centre Act 1962, shaped by the previous 50-year history of the park clearly belie that claim. Master plans of the Wascana Centre over the next 50 years reinforced the view that among the park’s many purposes, commercial ventures was not one.

But even more puzzling was his claim that “it (the Park) already largely is (lined) with the other buildings that ring the perimeter ... even up and down Albert St.”

There are no such commercial developments — none — unless of course he is referring to gift shops in government, cultural and educational buildings that were constructed in compliance with the original intentions for Wascana Park.

But if in fact Mr. Youck is speaking about those who would line Wascana Park with commercial developments, then we should all be alarmed, because Wascana Park as the citizens of Regina have known it for a century will never be the same.
