A touchdown signalled a major step forward for Mitch Thompson.

After missing the entire 2016 Canada West football season due to a knee injury, Thompson returned to the University of Regina Rams’ lineup with a flourish last Friday.

Thompson had five receptions, including one for a 21-yard major, to help the Rams defeat the UBC Thunderbirds 36-20 in seasonopening action at Mosaic Stadium.

“I’m used to seeing him in the end zone, so that just looked like home for him,” Rams quarterback Noah Picton said. “He was just doing his thing.”

Thompson suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in July of 2016. “I was playing flag football,’’ the Winston Knoll Wolverines and Regina Thunder product said. “I was running fullspeed and I went to make a cut. I stepped on a dirt patch and my knee buckled and that was it.”

He underwent surgery in November and then dedicated himself to rehabilitating the right knee.

“He worked hard last year and this summer to get back,” Picton said. “He’s a prolific receiver who can do a lot of things. It’s going to be nice to have him, Mitch Picton, Morty (Kyle Moortgat), Ryan Schienbein (to throw to). There’s a lot of weapons.

“Having Mitch back, he’s a bright guy and we can do a lot with him.”

Thompson looks forward to being part of a high-powered offence during his final season of U Sports eligibility. “I’m definitely up there in age, so it has been a process, but I’m glad to be back,” the 24-yearold Thompson said.

The Rams are to return to action Friday against the host University of Calgary Dinos.
