Owners of Neudorf hotel consider rebuilding
Locals saddened after historic building destroyed by fire over the weekend
Locals have reacted with regret to the loss of a local landmark, after the historic hotel in the town of Neudorf burned to the ground over the long weekend.
The fire broke out some time after 3 a.m. on Sunday. There is no word as of yet as to what caused the blaze, with an investigation ongoing.
“It’s been there forever,” Neudorf Mayor Murray Hanowski said by phone Wednesday. “It’s been quite a landmark. Like anything else, once you lose something in a small community, it’s hard to get it back.”
First opened as the Maple Leaf or Paysen Hotel in 1907, the hotel had most recently been known as the Neudorf Bar and Grill. Neudorf lies some 135 kilometres northeast of Regina.
“I heard about it right away that morning because I live right in town,” Hanowski said. “I was there shortly after (it started). It was just unbelievable. There was no way the firemen could stop an old building like that from burning, especially with everything being so dry. They just couldn’t save it. They had to tend that fire Sunday all day, (even) after they put it out.”
“We’re going to miss it. They had fixed the bar part up real nice, with a saloon-type bar, and they had entertainment in there,” he said, adding that the most recent owners had been there around two years.
“We were hopeful that it was going to take off.”
On the hotel’s Facebook page, its owners said they will try to rebuild it.
“Well its been a long tiring not to mention devastating week for our family and this great community,” they posted. “At this time our plan is to rebuild. Anything and everything is appreciated. Thank you.”
